May 10-14 is Infrastructure Week!
This week serves as a good opportunity to recognize all the infrastructure required to carry water to homes and businesses 24/7 and the hard work involved to maintain it.
Some of DWAs infrastructure is obvious, like the thousands of fire hydrants used to fight fire in Palm Springs and the portion of Cathedral City we serve.
Most of it though, is not easily visible – like the approximate 425 miles of underground pipeline that carries water throughout our service area.
Other behind-the-scene infrastructure includes: 25 reservoirs, 22 active wells, 11 potable water boosters, 4 surface water intakes, 2 solar fields, 2 shallow groundwater irrigation wells, 2 hydroelectric plants, 2 wastewater lift stations, a surface water filtration plant, recharge basins, a wastewater collection system, and a water reclamation plant.
It’s this elaborate system that makes up our water distribution system and allows us to deliver safe and affordable water to our customers.
