Together, Coachella Valley Water District (CVWD) and Desert Water Agency (DWA) have replenished more than 330,000 acre-feet of imported water into the Coachella Valley groundwater basin so far this year.
That is more imported water than has ever been replenished within a year and is more than will be used this year by all groundwater pumpers, marking a significant milestone in increasing groundwater levels in local aquifers.

On June 20, DWA's Board of Directors, made up of local community representatives, will vote on a proposed rate increase slated to go into effect on July 1, 2017.  If approved, the rate for water consumed would increase by 15 cents per unit (748 gallons) to $1.72 and the effect on the monthly meter charge would be a $3.71 increase for almost all residential customers. At this meeting, the Board will also consider putting lates fees in place and will review the budget for the fiscal year starting July 1, 2017.

On June 20, Desert Water Agency’s Board of Directors, made up of local community representatives, voted unanimously to approve the agency’s fiscal year 2017-2018 budget. The Board also allowed the planned rate increase to move forward and implemented late fees to cover the resources spent on delinquent accounts.

Desert Water Agency is providing travel dog bowls and bandanas to the shelter to send home with every dog adopted during the Dog Days of Summer, June through August. Each week DWA will place a photo of an adoptable senior or long-term dog in their lobby and employee break room. The agency will also highlight the program in its customer newsletter and post photos of the adoptable dogs on Facebook and Twitter.

Desert Water Agency (DWA) has officially launched its e-billing service and customer information hub, myDWA. This service will allow customers to sign up to get their bill emailed to them, plus they will be able to look back at historical information and determine how they are doing on reducing water use. DWA customers can create an online account today at no charge by visiting www.myDWA.org.

The United States Supreme Court announced today it will not review a court decision in a lawsuit that the Agua Caliente Tribe filed against Coachella Valley Water District and Desert Water Agency in 2013 seeking unprecedented rights to groundwater, superseding all other water users. The decision from the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, granting superior rights to groundwater to the Tribe will remain in effect.

The lawsuit, filed by Agua Caliente in 2013, has set precedent in the Ninth Circuit (CA, OR, WA, AZ, NV, ID, MT, HI, AK) and will establish precedent throughout the country if the Supreme Court picks up the case this fall.

Thursday, December 15, 2016 - DWA Approves New Rates to Address Infrastructure and Financial Needs

DWA held a hearing on Thursday evening for community members to share their input, and to allow the Board of Directors to make a final decision on the first of five proposed rate increases through 2020. The Board unanimously approved the initial rate increase of less than $4.00 a month for the majority of water customers, which will go into effect on January 1, 2017. Subsequent rate increases will be reviewed and determined at public meetings closer to the date that the rates would be rolled out.

The State Water Resources Control Board adopted a new Emergency Regulation for Statewide Urban Water Conservation, which extends and modifies the previous Emergency Regulation through October of this year. The revised Emergency Regulation acknowledges that climate should be factored into agency conservation standards. Desert Water Agency’s new conservation mandate has been adjusted from 36 percent to 32 percent moving forward.
